Carlo Memo for Peace

from New Venice

by Alberto Vitucci

The Venetian artist celebrated by his friends Carlo the "Devil" Memo has inaugurated
his tribute to peace

In Burano they call him "Devil". Perhaps because of his shy and solitary character. And for his great desire to live free and independent.

In reality Carlo Memo, born in 1941, is a great artist with a tender soul. Good and generous. Gifted with a touch of genius that makes him one of the most important living Venetian artists.

Now Memo has inaugurated his tribute to peace on May 1st, Labor Day.

A very colorful canvas, in his style that critics call "abstract expressionism" that recalls the colors of his island and the lagoon.

It is entitled "Carlo Memo for Peace". Exhibited at the Spazio Ravà in Dorsoduro, inaugurated in the presence of Marco Borghi, president of the Municipality, Nicola Funari, and the lawyer Gaetano Guzzardi who has purchased several of Memo's works.

An artist often forgotten, perhaps because of his gruff and shy character. - He deserves a corner in the museum of modern art at Ca' Pesaro -, say his admirers.

He actually offered to donate his works to the Municipality for years, receiving distracted responses.

Itinerary The painter Carlo Memo of a life dedicated to the lagoon, also exhibited in Japan. But not in Venice.

In 2004 Memo had been evicted from his studio house in Torcello. A committee of friends had mobilized, and the Municipality had finally given him a house in the center of Burano.

- In Mestre I would have died -, he recalls.

For Carlo, life is also traveling in the lagoon, aboard his boat. Contemplating the nature and beauty of his island.

A particular technique, reminiscent of the expressionists. A domestic horizon, that of the lagoon and the bell tower of Torcello, but also of infinite spaces, places and distant countries interpreted in his search for color.

Famous directors such as Carlo Mazzacurati were also inspired by Carlo Memo.
